Description

Introduction
Westkon Precast Pty Ltd is a privately owned precast manufacturing and erecting company. Primarily based in Melbourne, it has supplied a diverse range of precast products to projects around Victoria and adjacent states for the past 20 years.

The Westkon team combines to provide its clients with a full range of services from design and buildability solutions, skilled drafting services, maximum production rates (via two high output precast yards), superior quality assurance procedures and erection crews to fast track projects.

The management team is continually striving to stay abreast of new industry developments, to ensure it can provide its clients with the best solutions available.  Now that Westkon has become one of the largest and most diverse precasters in Australia, it can produce precast in a cost effective and efficient manner.

Company History and Structure
Westkon Precast Pty Ltd was formed in 1987 and was operated by two families with strong ties to the concrete industry.  The company had an initial management staff of three and production/construction staff of ten. Its primary function was to produce concrete panels and detailed architectural products for the construction industry.

As the company developed, the production facilities were enlarged to service the civil engineering sector, by producing super tee beams, culverts and feature noise walls. Recently it set up a second precast yard in Melton, to substantially increase its production capacity, including the manufacture of innovative 'precast modules', which can halve the construction time of projects.

Today, Westkon employs 23 staff and more than 75 direct labourers, as well as several major subcontractors.

Capacity
The Sunshine facility is approximately 55,000m2 and contains a covered factory area of approximately 5000m2 for the manufacture of panels and similar work. The yard also contains two beam casting beds (140 and 160 linear metres long), two hollowcore casting beds(each 150 linear metres long) and other casting areas for parapets, traffic barriers, culverts and noise walls.

The Melton facility has approximately 4000m2 under cover, with two 150m-long prestressing beds. Another 80,000m2 is used for external storage and production facilities.

Occupational Health & Safety
Westkon always endeavours to continually maintain a good rapport with its production staff, and maintains an occupational health and safety commitment with an active committee and plans in place. Ongoing enhancements around the yards not only improve safety for workers, but also boost morale, reduce lost time injuries, and guarantee projected production rates.

Quality Assurance
Westkon has implemented a Quality Assurance system to ISO9000 Series. It ensures the appropriate management of each project, from its initial design to the final erection stage. Procedures are thorough and representative of the client's requirements, so satisfaction is assured. Management of all project drawings, in particular, are strictly controlled using QDMS (electronic drawing control system).
